Sydney and melbourne appeared on monday (march 23) in scenes not seen since the great depression, with the social welfare focal point (Centrelink) out of the long queue to apply for unemployment benefits. Studies estimate that more than 2 million people in Australia are likely to join the unemployed as a result of the new coronavirus pneumonia. Federal government is also aware of the problem, for which eligible unemployed persons will receive an additional $550 every two weeks from April onwards in a recent aid programme, in other words, almost twice as much benefit as originally received for six months.

$1117 for singles every two weeks

Before the new crown pneumonia crime of passion in australia, many people had never thought they would become unemployed and had no idea how to claim unemployment benefits. You can apply for a job-seeking allowance JobSeeker Payment (formerly called Newstart Allowance) if you are truly unlucky to be part of the job-reduction list. A $565.70 is currently payable every two weeks if you are a single person without children. However, in response to the new outbreak of pneumonia, an additional $550, or a total of $1,117.70, will government be paid to the unemployed every two weeks from 27 April.

If you are a single person with dependent children, you can now claim unemployment benefit up to A $612 every two weeks. By April, the unemployed could receive an additional $550 per fortnight, equivalent to $1,162.

No queue required, online application

You don`t have to go to the Centrelink in person to apply for unemployment benefits, government allow the unemployed to confirm their identity by phone to Centrelink staff. Accordingly, you should prepare the required supporting documents before calling Centrelink.

When you have CRN, login to the MyGov, select "Link Your First Service", follow the instructions. You are required to answer a series of questions and submit your bank data and other data. Upon completion, log in MyGov, select Centrelink, to submit unemployment benefit application.

You need to tell Centrelink on which day you want to start receiving unemployment benefits. Even if you don`t submit JobSeeker Payment application on that day, you can reissue the unemployment benefits from the date you specified.

Pending waiver for asset review

Australian citizen and permanent residents aged between 22 and 66 are eligible for unemployment benefits.

Under customary practice, JobSeeker Payment are subject to a waiting period (Liquid Assets Test Waiting Period) for current asset review, which typically ranges from one week to 13 weeks. so-called current assets, including those that the employer has not paid you salary. so who applies to the relevant waiting period?

  • Single persons with no children to support, with assets up to A $5,500 or more;
  • Single persons are required to support their children with assets of up to $11,000 or more;
  • Partner with assets up to $11,000 or more.

However, given the severity of the new coronavirus outbreak, new applications submitted from 25 March to 24 September 2020 are exempted from the waiting period, i.e. eligible applicants may receive unemployment benefits even if they have not exhausted their savings.

Furthermore, those who have applied for unemployment benefits in the past are required to submit the Certificate of Separation (Employment Separation Certificate), which has been working for the past 12 months, but the is suspended from 27 April.

As you can see, since it`s a job-seeking allowance, the word "JobSeeker"" means you` re working actively, even if you`re unemployed. government pay unemployment benefits to the unemployed to support their immediate needs, not to encourage people to rely on government for long-term economic assistance.
