Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia would continue to carry out a military mission in Iraq despite Iranian missile strikes against the base.

The Cabinet`s National Security Council is meeting in Canberra today to discuss developments in the Middle East.

Shortly after the meeting, Mr Morrison claimed Australia remained committed to fighting ISIS terrorist groups in Iraq, but government will continue to monitor developments closely.

He defended the National Security Council`s decision:" The situation was stable last night. "

"The grave hostilities we witnessed yesterday have ceased and, judging by the nature of President Trump`s statement today and the information at our disposal, we are in a position to continue to carry out the tasks we set out in the Middle East. "

Australia now has 300 troops and foreign officials stationed in Iraq, mostly in Taji military base near Baghdad.

The main mission of the Australian Defence Force in Iraq is to help train Iraq`s army as part of its campaign against the Middle East region`s ISIS terrorist.

Trump, speaking on the morning of the 8th u.s. local time, cooled the recent war on the edge of the u.s .-iran situation, saying the u.s. is ready to embrace peace, suggesting that the u.s. will no longer respond directly.

"Iran seems to be backing down, which is good for all sides," he said. "

Iran fired a ballistic missile yesterday from two U.S. bases in Iraq after U.S. forces killed Suleimani. However, iran`s authories later said they were not seeking an escalation or war.

In his statement, Trump announced that no Americans had been injured or killed in the attack. But he said he would continue to impose economic sanctions on iran and ensure that it does not possess nuclear weapons under his mandate.
