South Australia`s Country Fire Service said firefighters were facing a tough environment on Kangaroo Island, with the bushfire burning out of control and the site stretching 120km, the station reported.

Firefighters are patrolling the fire front, searching for breakthrough points and flames and trying to contain the blaze, Rural Fire Department Deputy Mark Jones told Journalist this afternoon.

"It`s a hard, difficult and dangerous job," Jones said.

"210,000 hectares of land have been burned on Kangaroo Island since January 20, earlier this month. The perimeter of the fire is 588 kilometers. The plane has been working for more than 500 hours in the fire.

"Today, some 395 firefighters are at the scene and 400 other support workers are assisting the island in its fire rescue and recovery efforts,300 of them from the defence sector. "

He said there were 83 fire trucks,30 farm fire brigades and five water bombers on the island.

Celebrity inland pilot Dick Lang and his son, Adelaide surgeon Clayton Lang, were buried in flames as their car was surrounded by flames.

The body of Mr Long,78, is thought to have been found in his car on the Playford Highway in Gosse, while his 43-year-old son was found far away.

The father and son had been outside to put out the fire when they were besieged by fire on their way home.

A total of 60 houses were destroyed and 150 were rescued.

"The winds have changed several times today, which will continue to pose a challenge to firefighters," he said.

"We lifted the emergency restrictions on Friday and opened the island. "

Advice for people on Kangaroo Island or going to go to Kangaroo Island is to stay away from the burning area, from the emergency area and at the command of the police. "

The island still has a large police force responsible for the management of roadblocks and road closures.

Meanwhile, colder weather in NSW has given firefighters the upper hand in several fires.

One of the biggest fires, the Gospers Mountain in Sydney`s north, has burned more than 500,000 hectares of land and is now under control since it began burning in October.
